A State historic railroad to Palestine,TX for lunch and back. Old footbridge to explore. County courthouse on square has walls full of murals (painted by prisoners) depicting the area history. Cherokee Theater has live stage plays.
Monahans Sand Dune State Park
Miles and miles of sand dunes where you can get out of the car to play. Flattened cardboard boxes make good sleds to slide down the dunes. Bring water, you're in West Texas.
Lost Maples State Natural Area
Fall foliage and over 300 species of birds that people come from everywhere, even Europe, to see Lost Maples State Natural Area, just north of Vanderpool and Utopia, TX. The road by Vanderpool store is scenic drive over mountain and cliffs.Drive slow!
Bandera, Texas
"Cowboy Capital of the World", with 7 world champs from the area. Rodeos, dancing, dude ranches (20 within 50 miles), several campgrounds in town. River lined with giant cypress trees. Great country dancehalls. Real cowboys and cowgirls.
